Waterworks Lamson Fly Fishing ReelsWaterworks-Lamson ULA Force™ LT Fly Fishing Reel (Sold Out)

Waterworks-Lamson ULA Force LT Fly Fishing ReelProduct design is the marriage of materials science and engineering with vision, creativity and art. It is the pursuit of product perfection through superior performance, simplicity and grace.

The Waterworks-Lamson is unique among fly fishing companies. They are not a machine shop selling reels or a marketing company importing products from overseas. They focus exclusively on fly fishing products and superior product design.  They are committed to the highest standards of domestic manufacturing.  You won't see The Waterworks marketing "just another fly reel" or a "me-too" accessory.

  • Superior function

  • Less maintenance

  • Greater Value

  • Made in the USA.  Warranted for Life

Waterworks-Lamson ULA Force™ LT Fly Fishing Reel

The ULA Force LT reel combines the weight savings of the ULA Purist with the smooth conical drag that is used in other Waterworks-Lamson fly reels. The ULA Force has the stopping power needed for strong running fish, durability for travel and saltwater exposure, yet is sufficiently lightweight to cast all day without fatigue. It is a large arbor reel built without compromise in design or materials.

The ULA Force reels also offer the versatility of the "Fx" spools. This means that you can buy a 5,6 weight reel for trout, and with the purchase of an additional (Fx) spool, you'll be able to run an 8 wt. saltwater line with plenty of backing for bonefish without having to buy a second reel.

Waterworks ULA Force LT Fly Reel

All Waterworks-Lamson ULA Force™ LT reels feature:

  • Large-arbor design for faster retrieves.  The ratio of arbor diameter to width and depth is optimized, which results in constant drag and less line coil memory

  • Extreme strength and lightness - fully machined from ultra-durable heat-treated 6020 aluminum alloy and Grade 5 titanium. Eliminates the negative forces a heavier reel exerts on a rod, improving casting feel and performance

  • Ceramic Type III anodized, which is 10 times thicker and harder than standard Type II used in competitor's reels.

  • Fewer parts, just 23, are needed to make the ULA relative to most competitor's reels at over 80.  Simplicity in engineering is a better design that reduces weight and increases reliability.

  • Patented zero-maintenance conical drag system that has low startup inertia, extreme sensitivity, and permanently sealed with dual o-rings.  The drag is machined from self-lubricated Delrin, Teflon, and lead impregnated brass.

  • Torrington zero-lash roller clutch system which acts like a transmission, ensuring instant drag engagement and no drag "spike" typical of traditional pawl-based systems

  • Open frame design and highly ventilated spool reduces overall weight and improves rod balance

  • Counter-balanced spool for reduced-vibration

  • Easily converted from right to left hand retrieve

  • Inexpensive quick-change spools

  • Fx spools that permit increasing reel capacity without buying a new reel housing

Waterworks-Lamson Reels Technical Details

Waterworks-Lamson Fly Reel Technical DetailsWaterworks-Lamson large arbor reels maximize the benefits of large arbor design by maximizing the arbor diameter-to-width ratio. The spool is large in circumference and wide, so that line is stored in a shallow layer. The increased circumference provides high retrieve rate and eliminates line coil memory. The wide, shallow line layer means there is little radius change as line is pulled form the reel. This results in constant drag torque during long runs and eliminates the risk of tippets breaking due to drag force gain.

The ULA, Litespeed, Velocity, and Radius drag consists of a pair of precisely matched conical elements which are drawn together with spring tension to produce variable rates of smooth rotational braking. By re-configuring the surface area of traditional disks into a pair of matching conical elements we were able to seal the drag completely from moisture, salt and grit. And since the mass of the drag elements is centralized, the spool's rotating mass is much lower which makes the reel more responsive to light drag settings. Because the average radius of the contact surface is much smaller (being conical rather than disk-shaped), start-up torque is too low to measure. US Patent #5,915,639; other patents pending.

Most premium reels rely on a pawl type clutch mechanism. These are often vulnerable to stress related failure, contamination and wear. The ULA, Litespeed, Velocity, and Radius employ a Torrington zero-lash roller clutch. This mechanism relies on the locking effect of a number of ramps and rollers to achieve torque transmission. There are no "teeth" or "steps" to break off or wear out. And the zero-lash feature means instant engagement. This improves feel and eliminates "spike" that the reel, line and leader experience when a typical pawl clutch hooks up.
